About the Role
Position Summary:
The Peer Support Specialist brings lived experience of recovery, mental health, substance use challenges to provide authentic, empathetic support during a crisis. Working in direct partnership with a Licensed Mental Health Worker, the Peer Support Specialist helps clients feel understood, reduces stigma, and promotes pathways to recovery and stabilization in ones life. This position is part of a 24/7 rotating schedule to ensure individuals and families receive support whenever they need it most.
Qualification:
Minimum of one (1) years in recovery or experience with personal relations with substance use or mental health.
If not Certified as a CPSP, Sounds of Sarah will provide that after Hiring - Required Peer Recovery Certification (CPSP – Certified Peer Support Professional or CPRC Certified Peer Recover Coach) along with all other training per program requirements.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Valid Indiana driver’s license that meets Sounds of Sarah standards and policy.
Willingness to complete all required training per program guidelines.
Commitment to the mission of Sounds of Sarah to reduce stigma, save lives, and strengthen community resilience.

Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Respond to provide in-person crisis (homes, schools, hospitals, and community settings)
Use personal lived experience to connect with individuals meeting people where they are during a crisis, offering support, guidance, hope, encouragement, and understanding.
Assist in de-escalation and stabilization, supporting both clients and families during highly stressful situations.
Provide emotional support, share recovery resources, and encourage next steps toward possible treatment or community services.
Help clients navigate services and ensure warm handoffs to providers and support networks.
Document services provided in accordance with program protocols.
Crisis response coverage as part of the mobile team working with local law enforcement if needed.
Collaborate closely with clinicians, dispatch, and community partners to ensure coordinated and person-centered care.
Skilled in building trust and maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
Effective communication skills
Ability to remain composed and supportive in unpredictable or high-stress situations.
Basic data entry skills to track services and outcomes.
